For farmers who have Solanaceae and cucurbits in their gardens, you may start experiencing this in your plants during fruiting. This condition (Blossom enrot) is so common when there is a prolonged dry spell. This is caused by a lack of calcium and too much sunshine. Calcium as a macronutrient can be present in the soil, but its uptake by the plants is reduced due to limited moisture.
To manage this:-
1. Start the application of calcium-rich fertilizer (CAN) at on the set of flowers throughout the fruiting stage.
2. In adverse situations, you can mix 250g (half a cup commonly known as apwoti) of granular CAN into 20 liters of water and drench 1 cup (apwoti) around the root zones of the plant.
3. Ensure that there is sufficient water for plants during the flowering and fruiting stages. Kindly note that the uptake of nutrients still depends on the moisture in the soil.
